What is 2.5-Gigabit Ethernet?

It’s very simple. It’s 2.5 times Gigabit speeds and both consumers and businesses are finding Gigabit to be exceedingly unsuitable for modern uses. File transfers, real-time streaming and recording increasingly require higher speeds.

Faster solutions do exist. 10-Gigabit, 25-Gigabit and 40-Gigabit Ethernet are standards in use today. However, these technologies have not matured enough for them to be affordable and efficient. Most of these technologies are often found in the enterprise space where performance at any cost is needed. 2.5-Gigabit Ethernet provides a massive performance boost while being a mature technology that is affordable, and easy to integrate in a small space like a NAS. 2.5-Gigabit Ethernet controllers often do not require active cooling and do not require very much power or resources to operate while hardware support is increasingly common. 2.5-Gigabit Ethernet runs reliably well on existing Cat 5e cabling, making this speed boost one of the easiest to implement as networks will not need to be rewired, making 2.5-Gigabit Ethernet the most worthwhile investment at the time of this writing.

Most of ASUSTOR NAS devices come with one or more 2.5GbE ports. For NAS devices with more than one port, use link aggregation to increase network stability and performance to multiple computers for a better backup and storage experience.

Using Wi-Fi 6? Gigabit Ethernet is Simply Not Enough

2.5-Gigabit Ethernet has been with ASUSTOR for a long time. ASUSTOR was one of the first companies to adopt 2.5-Gigabit Ethernet on a NAS and among the first to release a 2.5-Gigabit Ethernet Switch, the Switch’nstor. Also in ASUSTOR’s arsenal is the 2.5GbE Type C-USB Ethernet adapter, the AS-U2.5G2 which complements the full range of desktop NAS devices supporting 2.5GbE by enabling almost any PC to support 2.5-Gigabit Ethernet.

ASUSTOR is committed to building a stable, high-performance, and complete 2.5GbE ecosystem, combining both speed and capacity. If using Wi-Fi 6, Gigabit Ethernet simply won’t do. 2.5-Gigabit Ethernet ensures that you can use your NAS at maximum speeds to quickly access large and small files or improve efficiency of collaboration.

Upgrade Now…or Later – It’s Easy!

Your wired network likely already supports 2.5-Gigabit Ethernet. Your Category 5e or Category 6 cabling already fully supports 2.5-Gigabit Ethernet. So when you’re ready to upgrade, you won’t need to rewire your setup. ASUSTOR provides highly compatible accessories to help you easily upgrade your NAS or computer equipment to 2.5GbE. It’s inexpensive too! Multiple devices can be affordably and easily upgraded to 2.5GbE to enjoy speeds that easily exceed double what Gigabit provides.
